Lloyd George Malley

PORTLAND - Lloyd George Malley, 92, of Portland died on Saturday, December 12, 2009, at St. Joseph's Manor.  Born in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, Canada on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1917 the only son of John and Violet (Harrison) Malley.  His father John died in World War I never to see his son George.
He was the beloved husband of the late Audrey J. (Purslow) Malley, who died in 2005, and father of five children; Lloyd Malley of Bangor, ME; Kenneth Malley of Claremont, FL; David Malley of Brunswick, ME; Thomas Malley of South Portland, ME and Patricia Nocera of Brockton, MA He was also a loving grandfather and great grandfather.

Violet and her son lived shortly after in Washburn, ME.  Surrounded by his mother's large family, including his grandmother and grandfather, many uncles and aunt, he grew up with their love and guidance.  He was raised on a large working farm of potato growing and a large lumbering operation.  Being close to the turn of the century, his mother, grandparents and uncles worked diligently, delivering much joy and love from an environment surrounded by horses, carriages, wagons, farm and lumbering equipment.  George was a handsome, clever, bright boy who became an expert at assisting with all of the accompanying work, leading him to become a capable and strong man.  He left the farm as a young man, later working on the construction of bridges in Maine and later the repair and maintenance any type of automotive engine.

He met "the love of my life...", as George described her, Audrey J. Purslow while they were both working in the South Portland shipyard during WWII.  He then joined the US Army and served in World War II with the 349th infantry, 10th Mountain Division, including service in Italy, Germany, Yugoslavia and all of Europe.  He quickly became Staff Sergeant, supervising 65 personnel in the maintenance repair and dispatching of automotive vehicles up to 2 ½ tons, requiring thorough knowledge of all regulations governing the maintenance of government vehicles.  He received several decorations and citations including the Army of Occupational medal, World War II Victory Medal and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.

Upon returning from WWII he married Audrey and lived in Somerville, MA raising their three children Patty, Tommy and David.  He owned and operated his own automotive garage and later moved to Portland, ME in the middle 1950's.  He was employed with General Motors for years and later owned and operated Fleet Service Garage, focusing on the repair of large trucks.

He and Audrey enjoyed being close to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He lost his Audrey in 2005, but continued to live independently with a vitality and appearance of a much younger man.  He was a proud, strong man of Maine and a true gentleman.

He will be greatly missed by all of his large family and many friends.  He will remain in their hearts and souls forever.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, December 17, 2009, from 4 - 7 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland.
