Philip Gemmer
FALMOUTH - Philip Gemmer, 79, passed away on January 19, 2010 after a short illness. A native of the Portland area, Philip was the son of Mary Wheeler Gemmer and S. Earle Gemmer. He attended Governor Dummer Academy and Proctor Academy for his secondary school education. He then studied at Wabash College before being graduated from Babson College. He went on to serve in the US Naval Reserve and was promoted to LTJG.
He was President and owner of Forest City Chevrolet/Saab, the former Forest City Motor Co., started by his father. Philip was chosen to be a Director of the American International Dealer Association, and in 1996 received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award. He was very active in the civic, school, and business communities of greater Portland as a Director and Trustee of several boards.
In his later years he enjoyed time with friends at the Cumberland Club and the "Know Nothing" Club. His most fervent interests were always Maine and the outdoors. Sugarloaf Mountain, Panther Pond, and fly-fishing at the Megantic Fish and Hunt Club were very dear to him.
He is survived by his ex wife, Alice Palmer Hunneman; son Wheeler and his partner, Mohan; son Fred, his wife, Connie, and their children, Cary, Annie, Louisa and Fritz; and son Chris.
A reception given by Philip's sons for family and friends will be held at the Cumberland Club in Portland on Friday, January 22, from 3PM to 5PM. A memorial service will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be given to the Hospice of Southern Maine at 180 US Route One, Scarborough, Maine 04074. The family is grateful for the kindness and care given Philip by the hospice in the last weeks of his life.
