Allan Roger Knight


PORTLAND - Allan Roger Knight, 90, of Portland, Maine, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2010. Allan was born on April 10, 1919, the youngest son of Charles P. and Margaret Doughty Knight of Falmouth, Maine. Allan graduated from Falmouth High School, Falmouth, Maine in 1937 and Colby College, Waterville, Maine in 1941. He was a member of the ATO fraternity while at Colby. He attended Wentworth Institute in Massachusetts for engineering in 1942. When World War II broke out, Allan enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was a First Lieutenant with the 767th Group and flew 17 missions on a B 24 as a bombardier. The group was based in Sheranoga, Italy and Allan attended many reunions with the crew after retiring from service.

Allan loved sailing and skiing and spent much of his time on woodworking projects. In his spare time, he built a yawl sail boat in the backyard of his suburban home in North Branford, Connecticut.

 Allan was employed by Honeywell and JP Salamini Co. in Connecticut designing the layout of electrical systems in commercial properties. Allan was a member of the Masons and Kiwanis.

  Allan and his wife, Norma Sanford Knight, retired and returned to Maine 23 years ago. Allan was active in Woodfords Congregational Church.

       Allan is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma Sanford Knight of Portland, Maine, his daughter, Elizabeth Knight Warn of Portland, Maine, his son, Allan Roger Knight, Jr. of Guilford, Connecticut, his granddaughters, Julia and Lesley Warn of Portland, Maine and nieces and nephews including his godchild, Rebecca Swiggert  of Boston, Massachusetts.

       The family would like to thank the staff at Brentwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Services Center for their support and care of Allan in recent years.

       The private gathering will be held at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland, ME 04103. A funeral service at Woodfords Congregational Church followed by burial at Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth will be announced in the spring.

 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maine Alzheimer's Association, 170 U.S. Route 1, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.
