Helen D. (Currie) Horton

FALMOUTH - Helen D. (Currie) Horton, 93, of Falmouth died Thursday, March 25, 2010 at her home.  She was the wife of the late Frances P. Halpin who died in 1948 and the late James Horton who died in 1998. Helen was born in Drew, Maine on October 5, 1916 the daughter of the late Vaughn and Lula (Bishop) Currie.  She grew up in Dover-Foxcroft and graduated from Foxcroft Academy.  She then went on to earn her R.N. from Maine General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1939.
She worked as a registered nurse for many years in a variety of positions.  After her first husband died she owned and operated a nursing home in Dover- Foxcroft for seven years.  In 1955 she moved to Falmouth with her second husband.

She worked at the Maine Medical Center, did private duty nursing and in the late 60's became the first R.N. in the state to do home dialysis for a patient that she had been caring for.

 Her hobbies included sewing, knitting for members of her family, and braiding rugs. In her later years she knit caps to donate to the newborn nursery at Maine Medical Center.   She was an accomplished cook and made wedding cakes for family and friends.

 She is survived by her daughter Margaret J. Halpin of Stuart, Fl. and South Portland, Me. and her son James F. Halpin and his wife Kathleen of Falmouth.  She also leaves two grandchildren Patrick Halpin and Kimberly Halpin both of Falmouth, as well as two brothers, Ray Currie of Stuart, Fl. and Robert Currie of Dover-Foxcroft, Me., a niece and several nephews.

 Her service will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

 Arrangements are under the direction of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland.
