YARMOUTH - Llewellyn Russell Nelson, 74, died June 6, 2010 after a brief illness at Brentwood Nursing Home. He was born April 7, 1936 in Portland, the son of the late Edward Nelson and Lula (Conary) Nelson. Llewellyn went to Gorham State College for teaching. He received his masters degree at University of Maine at Orono in biology. Lew was a member of the Phi Beta Kapa fraternity. He was employed for 20 plus years at Fox Lane Academy in Westchester County, New York. Lew loved teaching and he also enjoyed being a soccer referee and tennis coach. Lew stayed active by not only coaching tennis, but he loved to play tennis. Lew was a long time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and an acolyte.
He is survived by his sisters; Josephine Swan of Swan Island, Maine, Marion Sullivan of Deering, New Hampshire, Prudence Nelson of Syracuse, New York and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday June 17, 2010 at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland.
Interment will be in Forest City Cemetery South Portland.
